Playing an active role in the local community is something we think every business should do and we regularly get involved in supporting a wide range of community organisations and events.
Simply put, the more you put into any community, the more you get out of it. Whilst most community organisations have little use for our commercial storage equipment we find various ways of getting involved in many projects we simply think are a good thing. Below you can find details of some of the many groups and events we support as a company and the charity activities undertaken by members of our team.
Brompton Academy, Gillingham
Each Christmas Acorn Storage Equipment selects a local charity to receive a donation. This year Sales Director Neil Wood has pledged his support for Young Carers at Brompton Academy, a secondary school close to our Kent offices. Within the Academy they have identified students who are caring for someone in their family who might be ill or disabled. Jo Price, Director of Innovation and Community at Brompton Academy, said: "Due to their family commitments Young Carers may need extra help with their studies and homework. As well as fundraising for team building activities and day trips we are keen to support the Young Carers with their learning and we are inviting local sponsors to assist us with providing ICT technology to help them reach their full potential whilst in mainstream education". Acorn Storage Equipment has donated the funds to buy 4 iPads that can be used by students for educational games and research for upcoming exams. Demelza Twilight Walk – Sittingbourne – July 2011
If you were in Sittingbourne on 16th July and witnessed a sea of red tutus – you weren’t seeing things, Demelza House staff and more than 150 walkers were taking part in a twilight 10k walk for charity. And amongst them was Acorn Storage Finance Director Alison Eldridge.
Natalie Tegg, Head of Corporate and Community Income Generation said: “As we get very little Government funding we rely on the support of the community and events such as this to raise funds to continue our hospice support for hundreds of families in Kent, Sussex and South London”. Alison raised more than £100 for the Sittingbourne Children’s Hospice. For more information about the work of Demelza House visit www.demelza.org.uk
Race for Life – Folkestone - June 2011
“I had such fun last year in the boiling heat, I decided to have another go!”, said Acorn Storage Finance Director Alison Eldridge after completing this year’s Race for Life. Raising more than £600 for Cancer Research UK, Alison’s sponsored 5k run took her and the pink-clad ‘team girls!’ on a scenic jog around The Leas in Folkestone, Kent.
Race for Life is the UK's biggest women-only charity fundraising event. Taking place each year there are more than 300 events throughout the UK that raise valuable funds for the work of over 4,000 researchers, doctors and nurses dedicated to helping more people beat cancer.
Age Concern – Sheppey – December 2010
Last year Logistics Director Shane Wood nominated Age Concern as his preferred charity for our annual Christmas donation.Elaine O’ Brien, Day Centre Manager, Rosemary House, Sheerness said: “I would like to thank Acorn Storage Equipment for your very generous donation of £1,000 towards our Christmas festivities at Age Concern Sheppey, it was a wonderful surprise. It is only with donations from the local community that we can offer the extras to our clients, especially as some have little or no family an ours are the only celebrations they will have, and the generosity of your donation has certainly helped to make that happen this year”.
Machu Picchu Expedition for Demelza House, Peru - 2008
Hiking the Inca trail to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, Acorn Storage Sales Director Neil Wood and his son raised more than £6,000 for Demelza House.
Said Neil: “It was a once in a lifetime experience. Of the eight days trekking, three were at high altitude but the end result was well worth the effort. Not only did we see some stunning scenery we raised money for a local charity that provides hospice care for over 600 children and their families in Kent, Sussex and the South East”.
Neil's fundraising donation went to Demelza House Kent, a children's hospice based in Sittingbourne that provides services, facilities and support groups for terminally ill children or young people and their families.
National Deaf Children’s Society – Wall of China – 2007
The National Deaf Children’s Society is the leading charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people. NDCS provides parents with unrivalled information and support on all aspects of childhood deafness.
In 2007 Alison Eldridge undertook an amazing journey, spending 10 days walking along the Wall of China and raising £6,500 for the NDCS. Said Alison: "We were fortunate enough to be in Beijing when they were preparing for the 2008 Olympics. The Wall was steeped in ancient history yet at the same time there were huge developments going on around us as China prepared to host the Games. My personal highlight was being one of only five members of the group who tackled a notoriously steep section made up of almost vertical steps!"
